Meet Jason Clotfelter-COO-Maestro Maintenance Management
Jason is the COO of Maestro Maintenance Management, leading the day-to-day operations of the firm, product development, and helping to serve property owners with all their maintenance needs. Jason originally served as the Director of Building Services for Orchestra Partners, a leading Birmingham based real estate development firm, from which Maestro Maintenance was spun out from. Jason is a graduate of North Alabama University with a degree in Marketing.
I was fortunate enough to get to meet Jason and Orchestra Partners/ Maestro Maintenance founder Hunter Renfroe a few months ago through my friend and fellow Venture for America Fellow, Kyle McKinley, who serves as the Technology Manager for Maestro Maintenance. The team at Maestro has just launched its services for the residential market and considering the times, I thought it would be great to share the Maestro story and Jason’s insights on property maintenance and how technology will play a role in helping commercial and residential property owners maintain their property.
Welcome to the Stage, Jason Clotfelter!
1. Where did the inspiration for Maestro Maintenance come from?
The inspiration for Maestro came when our founder Hunter Renfroe completed the development of his family business headquarters; he quickly learned firsthand that many commercial owner-occupiers were stuck in a “service gap.” Most of these businesses ( Ex. You’re a lawyer, but own the building your office is in) are too small to justify hiring full-time maintenance staff but too busy running their businesses to manage their buildings effectively.
Maestro was incubated under Orchestra Partners for its first few years, and we became a separate company in March 2018.
2. You just launched Maestro for the everyday homeowner, what were the key drivers behind launching for residential drivers and what services are being offered?
COVID-19 and the new normal of working from home we’re definitely some of the key drivers behind launching Maestro for home. The other main driver was as our customers learned to trust us with their buildings that they owned as owner-occupiers, they also wanted to trust us with their home’s maintenance needs as well.
So many people want a service they can trust like Maestro to take care of things that are broken around the house and that are essential to everyday home living. They want to know that the service they ordered is going to show up on time while they’re either at home or away, do an excellent job, and not only that but adhere to Maestro guidelines and wear the proper PPE while they resolve an issue in your own home while leaving it clean.
We believe this is a product and service that can even eventually disrupt something like the home warranty industry, which profits off you anyway regardless of the maintenance issue that you have is fixed by the home warranty company’s maintenance person. There is no guarantee with home warranties that you’re going to get the best in class service for your at-home maintenance needs.
3. Post COVID-19, do you see more and more commercial and residential property owners becoming more dependent on platforms like Maestro Maintenance?
Yes, absolutely, as we’re talking to homeowners, we’re seeing more and more them express interest in platforms like ours where they can get vetted help for their maintenance needs. In particular, they’re wanting services that will show-up without them being home and taking care of their maintenance issue. There arent many services you can trust to let into your own home when you’re gone that are one, going to show up one time or actually show-up and two, actually do great work while being clean at the same time.
Maestro can be that platform that keeps your home or commercial properties clean and up and running so you can enjoy everyday home living and the tenets of your properties are happy too.
4. What is your long-term vision for Maestro Maintenance and how do you see the company and services offered evolve over time?
We hope, short-term, to have a stellar leadership team in place, and our core processes flushed out so we can begin expanding to other cities. Long term, we would love to be in 6 other cities throughout the Southeast, and eventually, all 50 states serving property owners by resolving their maintenance needs. We hope to continue learning as we onboard more and more residential and owner-occupiers, and I hope eventually we disrupt the home warranty market.
In terms of product, we see our platform evolving from being just a website portal to being a web app and potentially even a mobile app or just being a QR code that you can scan then text your maintenance issue too. Our product is something we plan on spending more time on in the future, and really want to make sure we get the necessary feedback from homeowners and owner-occupiers before we build something that users potential don’t want.
A big thank you to Jason for taking the time to speak with me and share his thoughts and vision for the future of Maestro Maintenance and to Kyle as well for helping to put together this interview.
I am super excited to see Maestro continue to grow and be a tremendous part of Birmingham and the Southeast’s start-up community!
